Robotic Arm with Drive Train
Our robot project involved designing, building, and analyzing a robot for a class competition. We aimed to create the best robot using skills from previous projects. The project focused on hands-on skills like sketching, computer-aided design (CAD), and using shop tools. We also learned about machine design, teamwork, and applying physics.
One of the main challenges we addressed was ensuring the 4-bar lifting system could lift the required weight. We were concerned about the motor skipping, the acrylic bending or breaking, and poor manufacturing causing the lift to sway. To test this, we built a prototype with a geared motor and tested its lifting ability. We also analyzed the maximum weight the 4-bar could lift.
Our tests showed the 4-bar lift could lift the supply box without significant issues. We also found that adding a rubber band helped reduce the load on the motor and strengthened the structure. This risk reduction exercise taught us the importance of testing and refining our design. We learned that the acrylic was strong enough and the motor had enough torque, but we also identified areas for improvement, like adding the rubber band.
Another area of concern was the intake mechanism. We were worried about the geometry of the intake and whether it could effectively pick up and hold the supply boxes. To address this, we created a prototype of the intake using foam core and analyzed its ability to pick up boxes. We also tested different orientations and horizontal bracing to ensure the intake maintained its shape.
Through this project, we gained valuable experience in designing, building, and analyzing a robot. We learned the importance of risk reduction and how to apply it to our design process. We also learned about the different components of a robot, such as the drive train, 4-bar linkage, and intake hook. By overcoming the challenges we faced, we improved our design and increased our chances of success in the competition.
