From a young age, my inherent curiosity about the mechanics of everyday objects sparked a lifelong interest in technology and engineering. This wasn't a superficial interest; it was a deep-seated desire to understand the underlying principles that made things work. I would often disassemble toys, clocks, and even household appliances, driven not by a desire to break things but to learn how they were constructed and how each component contributed to the overall function. These early experiments, which included rearranging electrical wires and reversing electrode connections, provided hands-on lessons in basic electronics and engineering principles, laying the foundation for a passion that has only intensified over time.

A particularly impactful incident, detailed in the attached documentation, involved the disassembly of our family computer. Driven by an eagerness to explore its internal components - the motherboard, power supply, and other elements – I meticulously documented each part, confident in my ability to reassemble it. However, my lack of experience led to a critical error. Upon reassembly, I mistakenly connected the computer to a 220V outlet, typically used for high-power appliances like air conditioners. The immediate result was a loud pop, a complete system failure, and a house-wide power outage.

This event, while initially devastating, served as a profound learning experience. The emotional impact – the shock, guilt, and disappointment – underscored the importance of caution, respect for technology, and the potential consequences of unchecked curiosity. It marked a transition from a naive approach to a more methodical and informed one. I realized that understanding the why behind technology was just as important as understanding the how.

The subsequent years were dedicated to a more structured and responsible approach to learning. I immersed myself in books, online tutorials, and any resource I could find related to electronics, computer repair, and circuit design. This self-directed learning not only mitigated the risk of future mishaps but also deepened my appreciation for the complexities of technology. I learned to read circuit diagrams, troubleshoot issues systematically, and handle electrical components safely.

This foundational passion led me to initially pursue a computer science degree in college. I was specifically interested in the workings of advanced technologies such as AI and robotics. The idea of building smart systems was captivating, and I began learning the programming and algorithms needed for these innovations. I was captivated by the prospect of creating intelligent systems. However, my academic journey exposed me to a broader spectrum of technological fields. A pivotal moment occurred when I encountered mechatronics, an interdisciplinary field that combines mechanical engineering, electronics, computer science, and control engineering.

My interest gravitated toward control systems, simulation, and hardware-based robotics. The ability to design and program robotic systems capable of real-time interaction with the physical world was particularly compelling. I became fascinated by the application of control systems to enhance the functionality and efficiency of robots, enabling them to perform intricate tasks with accuracy and consistency. The opportunity to simulate these systems before real-world deployment, allowing for iterative testing and refinement, further fueled my interest.

Recognizing this burgeoning passion, I made the deliberate decision to transition my academic focus to engineering, specifically mechatronics. This decision represented more than just a change in major; it signified a fundamental shift in my personal and professional goals. I acknowledged the significant challenges inherent in pursuing an engineering degree, particularly as a first-generation immigrant and college student. The combination of a demanding curriculum, familial expectations, and the inherent difficulties of navigating a new educational system created considerable pressure.

Despite these challenges, I remained steadfast in my commitment. I proactively sought out supplementary resources, engaged actively with professors and peers, and immersed myself in practical projects to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. I participated in workshops, joined student organizations, and collaborated on innovative projects, all of which enhanced my understanding of mechatronics and reinforced my commitment to the field.

This journey, while arduous, has been incredibly rewarding. I've witnessed firsthand the tangible results of hard work and perseverance, reflected in my growing skill set and confidence. My experiences have not only shaped my academic path but have also instilled a deep sense of purpose, driving me to contribute meaningfully to the evolving landscape of robotics and automation. My long-term aspiration in the STEM field is to cultivate continuous growth, steadily accumulating knowledge and expertise. I am profoundly grateful for the obstacles I have overcome and remain eager to embrace future challenges with the same dedication and enthusiasm.
